Does bedwetting just disappear one day?

Many children who suffer from bedwetting will stop naturally over time, even without treatment, due to late maturation of the restraint mechanism.

The problem is that there is no way to predict if and when the child will stop bedwetting. In situations where the frequency of bedwetting decreases (provided that the parent does not wake up or take the child to the bathroom at night, and does not restrict him or her from drinking before bed), it is advisable to wait and see if the frequency keeps decreasing until complete dryness.

In cases where bedwetting is not significantly reduced, it is advisable to treat immediately. When parents ask me why not wait for bedwetting to naturally disappear, I answer with a rhetorical question: “If you are assured that in two or three years, the child will stop wetting, is it justified to let him continue to suffer for so long, to avoid sleeping outside, and to get up every morning with a wet and smelly bed? “.

I believe that the answer is clear. Treating bedwetting as soon as possible may improve a child’s quality of life and there is, therefore, no justification to deprive him of the possibility of treating bedwetting.

In many cases, where there is no initial psychological problem, it may develop at a later stage as a result of bedwetting. The child’s confidence and self-esteem may be impaired. The child invests a lot of energy in asking- “Why is this happening to me? What is wrong with me?”, and makes many efforts to hide it.

Most bedwetting children believe that they are among the only ones suffering from this problem – and that is, of course, not true.
