Bedwetting and deep sleep

What is deep sleep?

Deep sleep is a stage of sleep characterized by slow brain waves and high activity in the brain stem, which controls basic life-sustaining functions like breathing and heart rate. It is an important stage of sleep as it helps with physical recovery and rejuvenation, as well as learning and memory consolidation. It typically occurs in the first half of the night and makes up the largest portion of the sleep cycle.

Is there a connection between bedwetting and deep sleep?

Yes, there is a connection between bedwetting (also known as nocturnal enuresis) and deep sleep. Bedwetting is more likely to occur during deep sleep because the body’s production of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which regulates urine production, is suppressed during deep sleep. This leads to a reduced ability to control bladder function, resulting in bedwetting. Children who wet the bed are often deep sleepers and have trouble waking up to use the bathroom.
